“How May I Serve You....Or Not?”

In last week’s entry I spoke briefly about an India Arie concert that my wife and I attended at a local San Diego concert/dinner venue named Anthology’s. While the concert was pretty great (India doesn’t disappoint) the service at this place was atrocious!!!! The wait staff was completely inattentive and quite a bit snooty, which is leading me to write this entry about my experiences at this and other restaurants. I’m sure everyone that has either been to a restaurant or worked in the food service industry will find something to either agree or disagree with.

Let me start off by saying that I have a lot of respect for waiters, bussers, hosts/hostesses and anyone that has contact with my food and has to put up with dozens even hundreds of people a day for minimum wage and tips. That being said there just a few problems I’ve noticed the last few times I’ve been served. The first and probably my biggest pet peeve about servers is their lack of attention to those who don’t drink. I understand that a lot of revenue and tips come from the drinkers, but those of us that don’t drink can tip just as heavily. Not only that but we stay coherent and remember the waiters that snub us because we are not getting sloppy-ass drunk and giving them hope of emptying our wallets when it comes to tip time. If they (servers) would treat us (non-drinkers) equally I think that the tips would be bigger and the customers would be happier. My personal experience with this was at Anthology’s.

My wife and I were seated first and I personally watched our waiter walk past us at least 4 times before the next groups were seated. When our waiter came to us to tell us about the menu (briefly) he asked us about drinks. Before we had the chance to tell him what we wanted he started to tell us about the wine selection (which I know is a standard practice) but when my wife interjected and told him that we weren’t drinkers his face changed. That’s when I had my “oh shit!!” moment. It’s kind of like the “Ah Ha” moment but for bad stuff.  I knew that from that point on that we would get little to no service. Unfortunately I was exactly right, when he went to the next group they ordered a bunch of drinks and the waiter’s face lit up big time. They had their drinks almost a solid ten minutes before we had ours and during those ten minutes they were well into getting their food order taken. When we finally got our drinks (that a busser brought not our waiter) I was livid but I know the golden rule of restaurants…. The customers are always right, but NEVER PISS OFF YOUR SERVERS!!!! This rule and only this rule kept me from saying something to the server.

I would say that probably another 10 minutes went by before he came back to us to find out what we wanted to order. The 10 minutes passed with both my wife and I trying to get the waiter’s attention so we could get refills and so we could order our food. When I finally tapped him on his shoulder (I hate putting my hands on people because I hate when people put their hands on me, so I was very uncomfortable with that) he shot me this real snotty look as though I was scum. So with an air of “you peasant, how dare you” he took our orders.  This "Holier Than Thou" attitude is another thing I can’t stand. Those of you in the “biz” please excuse me for this, but no matter what type of restaurant you work in, if you are a waiter, that is what you are….A WAITER!!! Now I know I may have just sealed my fate at whatever place I choose to eat at from now on, but it had to be said. Just because you work a 5 star place doesn’t mean that you can treat customers like you are better than they are! You have to remember this…you are working where people come to relax. In other words you are here to serve us and make our experience as amazing as you possibly can. It’s not the other way around, and if you think it should be you are severely mistaken. I’m not saying this to be an ass, but if you go to a restaurant as a server, you know how you would do things but you also know as a customer how you want to be treated. After I worked in that world for a bit I got a pretty good appreciation of both sides of the coin. I truly understand how people can get under your skin when they become finicky, winey, complaining “customers” but they are the ones that are keeping you alive in a sense.

By that I mean the better you are at your job the better the tip you get at the end. This leads me to my next peeve…TIPPING. I’m not against tipping, just the act of mandatory tipping. Why is it that they automatically add gratuity to parties over 6? Sometimes I think it’s because the server can’t handle the party and since their lack of ability won’t EARN them a tip, the restaurant sees it fit to reward their mediocrity with my money. Don’t get me wrong if the server was on their shit I would be tossing money at them (in a non stripper kind of way) in bunches. Do you remember that busser I briefly mentioned above? He got the tip that would have gone to the waiter, and I made damn sure that the waiter saw me hand it to him before I told the busser that he was 10 times more attentive than our so called waiter (after all the busser was the one bringing us our food and drink refills the whole night). As a matter of fact I can’t remember the last time I had really good service and a large group of friends at an eating establishment.  I understand that our group is not the only table they are serving but when the server comes to a table once then not again for 20 minutes at a time it’s ridiculous! That’s why they section rooms off for servers so they don’t have an overloaded work zone.

I HAVE been to a few restaurants in town where the service has been INCREDIBLE. I call these the “EXCEPTIONALS”. Not only do they serve some of the most amazing food, but the servers are out of this world. My “EXCEPTIONALS” are the prime example server greatness, and not all of them work at 5 star restaurants. That being said every time I’ve eaten at their places (ranging from chains like Tio Leo’s and Ruth Chris Steak House to specialized cuisine spots like Park House Eatery and Mr. A’s) I have been wowed at the level of service I received. They are courteous, attentive without being annoying, very knowledgeable about the foods they serve, and above all else they are very well versed in the art of seduction. Calm down I’m not saying that they are pushing up their breasts or slipping us their phone numbers, but in a sense by following through with all the above they are flirting with customers. They use their abilities to entice us into a bed filled with delicious food, wonderful ambiance, and even the respect of a call the next morning….in the form of a “thank you for coming and please visit us again”. All in all it is the perfect “friends with benefits” situation.

Its restaurants like these that make dining experiences amazing. To be honest its servers like the GOOD ones I mentioned that make the experience amazing. They are the beating heart of the food service industry. Without them not a lot gets done. Unfortunately for us, some of them act like they know they are the best. That’s why we occasionally get the snobby ones that can’t be bothered to take an order and get it to their table with a smile and a thank you. Like I said and will continue to stand on my soap box and yell, kindness will get you the world. People are generally easy but if you start things off bad…you’re going to have a bad experience. That goes both ways with servers and customers alike. I tend to be nice to my servers, because I don’t want spit in my food (yeah I saw Waiting, great movie) plus 9 times out of 10 if you are good to them they will be good to you and remember you the next time. That’s how you can either form a great sense of regularity at a restaurant where the establishment will treat you wonderfully, sometimes with extra benefits, or an experience that will cause the employees to pube up your food! So I will extend this warning to both customers and employees….CHOOSE HOW YOU ACT WISELY YOUR FUTURE MEALS DEPEND ON IT!!!!

Well everyone thanks again for your time today, and thank you for listening to me rant about my restaurant annoyances. I hope that you all have great restaurant experiences. Until we meet again I will leave you with this….. PLEASE DON'T SPIT IN MY FOOD!!!

“The Day I Got Pushed Out”

July 12th is a day that I will remember for the rest of my life….it was “the day I got pushed out”! By that I mean it is my birthday. July 12th1982 little old me popped in and the world as I knew it was about to change (primarily because I didn’t know the world yet lol). I share the date with my father, who is 30 years my senior and every year I see a little bit more of him in everything I do. Quite a few others share the 12th of July birth date, most notably Michelle Rodriguez, Brock Lesner, Kristie Yamaguci and Mr. JELLO himself Bill-FREAKING-Cosby (now that’s some serious dancin’ on your face!)! That’s pretty cool huh?

This year my birthday fell on a Tuesday, so that sucked but we decided to celebrate on the Saturday prior which was pretty awesome!! My wife decided to throw me a birthday house concert this year, and seeing as how we know so many of the local performers it was looking to be an amazing night. We had a lot of the local guys that I have been pumping up in my last few entries Kenny Eng, Trent Hancock, John Hull, and Rob Deez. Unfortunately Trent and Rob had shows later that evening so they didn’t get to play, but they showed up and hung out for a while which was pretty awesome. Trent even brought some home grown tomatoes and fresh baked cookies for me that were REALLY GOOD, so if he stops singing he can open up a vegetable and cookie store lol.

The reason for the house concert was twofold. Fold one, we wanted to hear some good music and fold two, we really wanted to introduce some of our friends to some of the great musicians that we know. I think we did a pretty good job at that. Even for the guys that didn’t get a chance to perform they met some of our people and intrigued them to the point where I keep getting text messages from my friends that can’t wait to see all the performers again. Aside from that we had some old friends meet new friends and some of them made some new contacts as well. Everyone bonded over great conversation, amazing music, and some of the best chicken and sausage jambalaya (made by my wonderful wife) I’ve had in a long time. We all worked so hard with the set up and planning for this and it paid off tremendously. I am such a moron for not getting pictures of everything, but everyone that was there seemed to be really impressed by everything. So to everyone who came and had a good time I want to say THANK YOU and I LOVE YOU ALL!!! I want to give a big shout out to Angelica, my sister (no "in-law" needed) and Wazi (our “sister”) for all of the help with the set up and clean up, we love you guys so much!

I got some amazing gifts and hilarious cards from everyone and one of my favorite cards came from my wife’s grandmother. It was a simple card with not a whole lot written in it but every year since I became part of their family she has sent me a card without missing a beat. This year is different because we lost my wife’s grandfather this year and it has taken its toll on everyone, especially since their anniversary is on July 10th. The simple act of sending me a card then calling me on my actual birthday to just sing me happy birthday meant the world to me. I love you and Grandfather is still with you…

Some of the other amazing gifts that I received where a 12-string guitar (yes I not only love music I dabble in it myself), a great set of clippers/beard trimmers (because keeping this hair do is rough work). I got some running shoes that will help out on those 5 plus mile walks my wife and I do every other day, some new underwear to add to the 4 pair I already own (that’s right now you know so much about me), a set of chef knives that are absolutely gorgeous (made from one piece of surgical steel and cut so very clean), a set of business cards that will help me promote my blog, and oh yeah I got a TV and some measly Santana tickets…..ok so it’s not just a TV it is a 46 inch HDTV 1080p, 4xHDMI, and all that awesomeness!!!! This TV is so freakin huge! It takes up my entire entertainment center!!!! I love it…..to say the least, and are you kidding me SANTANA tickets???!!!! I have wanted to see him since I was old enough to pick up a guitar!! Those were all from my wife isn’t she freaking awesome!!!! Stay tuned for more on that concert because I will be sitting so close he will be sweating all over me!! Gross, but for some reason I can’t wait!!

I got some gifts from my other friends as well like a beautiful necklace from Costa Rica made from beads and wood from Camille and Ivon, and a cool little candle from Dave and Kari at Food Farm, thank you guys. I also got some gift cards from a few of my friends and I actually love when I get those. Some people think that’s lazy gifting but I look at it like they want me to get what I want with no error room on their part, it’s really smart and I do it when I can. Since I am no good at proper protocol when it comes to thank you cards please think of this as a digital THANK YOU that will last forever on the web!

The Tuesday that my actual birthday fell on was a blur for the first 10 hours of me being awake because I had to go to work. I really wanted to take the day off but since I got the 4th off my paycheck would not allow me that luxury, so I fought through the day’s drama and hurried home for the evening. We ended up going to one of the better steak houses in the San Diego area (or where ever else they are), I’m talking about Ruth Chris Steakhouse. The reservation was made for one of the window seats facing the bay at 7pm, just in time for a beautiful view of the sunset. When I got there the hostess that took us to the seats wished me a happy birthday (thank god they don’t sing and makes asses of themselves and why would they? They are a pretty high end spot.), and put a hand full of little “HAPPY B-DAY!!” sprinkles on the table. That was a nice subtle touch.

When my waiter came to the table he took our orders and I started with a plate of crab stuffed mushrooms (out of this world and is making me hungry just thinking about them) that had this meatieness that felt like I was eating mini steaks stuffed with stove top stuffing (best stuffing ever I don’t care who you are) and delicious lump crab meat, and a cowboy rib eye…. Unfortunately a large party that came in before us ordered all of them. I was bummed, here it is my b-day and I can’t get the meal I wanted….never fear because our amazing waiter was there! He recommended a delicious bone in 20oz NY strip. I never say this but “OMFG” it was amazing! Cooked to a perfect medium doneness and served still cooking in butter….mmmmmmmmmmmmm BUTTER!!!! It had a taste that only heaven could come close to. If I had the chance I would have French kissed the cow that they served me and with every bite I’m sure I looked like I was. Each bite fell apart in my mouth and it was all I could do to not shove the whole steak in my mouth in one extra amazing bite. My only problem with the evening was that it had to end. For the dessert they brought me a beautifully made strawberry shortcake with these delicious little dark chocolate turtle candies, they were great and I got a few extra because my wife doesn’t like chocolate so yay for me!! All in all the night was absolutely wonderful….pricey but wonderful if you have the chance I recommend you go there.

Now along with the great house concert I went to a few others around the same time, the first show I went to wasn’t a musical show but comedy. It was pretty awesome the only downfall was that we were sat right in front of the stage….the AREA OF DEATH at comedy shows, so we were ready to get ripped to shreds by the comics. Luckily the comics didn’t say a word to us and just did their show, thank God.  Most of these guys were pretty funny but some of them were awful. I’m just happy that the guy we went to see (Dave Rich from Food Farm) was funny because I’m a jerk and didn’t want to have to let him know he stunk even though I would have. Another show that I got the chance to go to was the India Arie show at Anthology’s in San Diego. Even though the venue sucked hard (not sound wise but service) she sounded really great! She performed with a guy named Idan Raichel who sounded amazing even though his songs are mostly in Hebrew. His voice and piano skills were so beautiful and the two of them sounded great together. India brought her mother on stage to do some vocals over one of his piano parts and WOW she is not only an amazing singer but pretty damn fly on top of that. I would never have picked her as India’s mom because she looks so young and dressed like a 20 year old and pulled it off wonderfully! GO MOM!!! India focused a lot on her new project with Idan, which was cool but I was hoping for some stuff to sing along to. In any case she sounded amazing and I am glad that I went. We got the chance for a meet and greet after the show with India but Idan was nowhere to be seen. I was happy to give her my blog address and she asked me if I was going to blog about her and I said I would, so India I hope you are reading! Unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to take pictures with her because the crappy security guards at the venue were rushing everyone out the door, so BOO to them! Here they are performing “Gift of Acceptance” I hope you enjoy it.

A concert that I went to last night to kind of wrap up the birthday week was at my new favorite local spot Lestat’s to see Joel Eckels.

We first saw him earlier this year in SD doing a singer/songwriter round with the amazing Dawn Mitschele and his bluesy vibe was great. Every song that I heard made me feel everything he was going through when he wrote them. Last night’s performance was exceptional as well. He was the only person out of the performers that I knew and really the only one I cared for. I got a chance to speak to him after the show and he really seems to be a humble and gracious performer and a really nice person too. I can’t wait to see him more. I really think that you should take a look and listen for him because he has got a pretty big following in LA and I would love to get more people introduced to him. Hopefully he will get the chance to come to my wife’s “Art in the Yard” this August so we can see him again. Even if he doesn’t sing it would be awesome just to hang and get to know him a little better. If you are ever in the LA area please check him out at either the Hotel CafĂ© or at his spot Room 5 you will thank me later! Here he is performing 2 songs from his Lestat’s from last night’s show (7/16/2011). I can't remember the name of the first song but I believe its called "Weight of These Things" and "Gave My Heart to the Devil". Joel if i got the song names wrong please get a hold of me and I will change them ASAP!

So needless to say I had an amazing birthday week! 29 is starting off really good…smash that it’s beginning to look a lot like AWESOME!!!! Thank you to everyone that contributed to this week and whether you know it or not you made this week great!!! Thanks to my loving wife for everything that you did in making my life so far full of laughter, love and happiness! You are my life and my “erf” (she loves thatJ). Thank you all for listening to me go on about how great my life has been this week. I hope that everyone that has had a birthday this week (especially on the 12th) has had an amazing one!! Until next time Gazetteers……

Support Your Local EVERYTHING!!! Part 2

Continued from last week…….
So the next 4 artists I will be talking about have so much talent, charisma, and personality it’s unbelievable.  Each of their styles, while equally beautiful, are very different but at the same time all feel like home. These guys are true artists…one of them in the most literal meaning of the word.

Trent Hancock (http://www.trenthancock.com/ ) is a singer/songwriter that I found kind of on accident. He’s got a very smooth easy sound that is kind of reminiscent of the Beatles with a twist of some of the vets from the CBGB scene. His EP “Ghostbird” is said to be inspired by his time in the Brooklyn area as well as many of his other personal life experiences (as you will see in the video below I borrowed from YouTube). When I say that I found him on accident, I was at a concert at Lestat’s coffee house in San Diego (where I see a lot of great acts) watching a concert by Ernie Halter (who I will talk about later) when he called on stage a couple of his friends to sing a song with him. He also had Kenny Eng with him (who I mentioned in last week’s entry); well Trent’s voice caught my attention immediately. For one he was a new voice to listen to (and I love to find new people…don’t know if you noticed) and for another his tone was so clear and clean. You could hear every word, which when you can’t is something I hate, and if you didn’t know the song he was singing you could definitely pick it up just by listening.  After the show I got a chance to tell him how much my wife and I liked his voice and he gave me his Ghostbird EP. Needless to say it was on repeat for a few weeks after. I also have seen him on other occasions and each time he is better than the next. If you haven’t heard of him please look him up on either YouTube or iTunes. He is definitely worth your time. Check out this bio video, where he tells you a bit about himself.

Next on the mic we have a not so San Diego local….Ernie Halter (http://erniehalter.com/fr_newstours.cfm). Born in Inglewood (…”bitches”…. An Ernie fan inside joke, so don’t kill me gangsters of the wood that is full of ingles) in the 70’s, he spent most of his childhood in the O.C.  with his 2 brothers and his "Cuboslavian"(Cuban mother and Yugoslavian father in his words lol!) parents. I will let the bio on his site tell you the rest. What I will tell you is how talented this guy is. I owe his discovery to my wife (dammit), she heard him first on a soap called “General Hospital” and went nuts for the guy, and rightfully so. We got lucky enough to catch him at Lestat’s (see, I told you some awesome acts go there) because he posted something on Facebook a few hours before the show. That show was amazing. His voice is definitely a force to be reckoned with, and his lyrics are just the kind of thing that can make any woman putty in your hands. We’ve been faithful fans ever since. Every time he makes his way anywhere near SD we are there. We even made it out to that somewhat career changing show in Costa Mesa, California at La Cave (pronounced La Cov), where Ernie was visited by two special guests. Unfortunately those guests were not us, they just so happened to be Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. The two of them are apparently huge fans of Ernie’s to the point that Justin covered one of his songs. The song is called “Come Home to Me” and is beautiful. He even got on stage to sing it with him. Here is that video for you to enjoy.

My favorite song from all of his albums has to be a tossup of “Whisper” from the ”Congress Hotel” album, “Pretty Girl” from the “Starting Over” album and “Black Coffee in Bed” from the new “Franklin and Vermont” album. Those songs to me are 3 of the most well written songs (although “Pretty Girl” is a song by David Ryan Harris who is another stellar artist), and 3 of the most heart filled vocals I have heard from a “coffee shop performer”. I used quotations because my wife and I think that he is so much more than that. He is an amazing individual that is sure to be more than huge and anyway that we can help we hope he knows that we are an email or a phone call away. PLEASE CHECK HIM OUT!!!!

Another artist that is not so local but everyone knows even if they don’t think they do is a guy named Thomas Ian Nicholas (http://thomasiannicholas.com/). He is an actor turned singer/songwriter and what an awesome artist he is (let’s be honest I wouldn’t mention him if he wasn’t worth the time). He has this classic rock vibe that is mixed up with some pop and a good bit of alternative. Sounds crazy but I am so lucky that I was at Ernie’s show to catch him. Currently he is on location in Atlanta filming his new movie “American Pie 4”. I told you he is an actor, I’ll narrow it down for you he was also the lead actor in (and I know he’s gonna kill me lol.)….”Rookie Of The Year” the movie about a kid that cracked his arm and for a while was able to throw a baseball at ridiculous speeds for a kid and got drafted to the Cubs. If you know the movie then you’ll get my next quote “FUNKY BUTT LOVIN’!!!!” Anyways, back to the music, when my wife and I first saw him we had that “ooook how's this gonna work?…” kind of feeling. You know what I mean cause we weren’t sure how the “actor” was gonna pull it off, but WOW he plays the guitar exceptionally well, and his lyrics (at least for me) were something to relate to and the song that I related to the most was “Face In The Crowd” from the album “Without Warning” the acoustic version. If and when you get the album it is track number 11 (c’mon you know you want it!!). He really put it all on the line and left his life on the stage. He performed every song with so much feeling and had that gruffness in his voice that made me want to keep listening. I think that his jump into the music scene was a good one and for me was really well received. Today 7/10/2011 (today) just happens to be his birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!  Here he is performing “You Don’t Know” live in what seems to be an alley in Brooklyn, NY enjoy!!!

The last artist I will be talking about today is just that, a true artist….he paints some of the most amazingly realistic pieces of art that I have ever seen. His name is Daniel Jaimes (http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Jaimes/1087821132#!/profile.php?id=100000053214610) We first met him when my wife put an ad out on craigslist for artists to show at her yearly art show called “Art in the Yard” which I will be writing about in august when the event takes place this year. He was doing pencil drawings of famous people that you would swear were printed from the internet. He has moved into paint and it is amazing. I have some photos of his work that I will share with you below.

Like I said his work is absolutely amazing! His paintings make you feel as though you are in the movie with every superhero or committing crimes with every villain. When you take a closer look at his work you can see how much detail he puts into every piece. His stipple work (basically dotting to form shading or other lines) is phenomenal. When you see the work in person it will be all you can do not to empty your bank accounts to buy his one of a kind art work. I know some of you are thinking “millions of people paint portraits. What is so different about this guy?” and you are all right… lots of people do paint portraits but there is an eerie realism to his work that you can only appreciate in person, so follow him on Facebook to find out about his next gallery. If we are lucky he will be at our next “Art in the Yard” this August 13th in San Diego (more on that in the future).
Well everyone thank you for reading this week’s edition of the Penguin Gazette, and allowing me let you in on some of my local (or not so) favorites. All of the people mentioned mean a lot to me and I wish them nothing but the best! Please look out for everyone as they may be coming to a town near you!!!  As for me I think I liked the break from my normal rants and may make this a monthly segment, but don’t worry I will be back to “normal” next week with some new rants for my followers (all 3 of you lol). Thanks everyone and please pass the word if you like what you see and follow by email so you don’t miss a single edition of The Penguin Gazette!

Support Your Local EVERYTHING!!! Part 1

Hello everyone, I know the last few segments have been about me going on a tirade about things that bug me, so today I will be blogging about something I LOVE!!!!  I LOVE SUPPORTING LOCAL EVERYTHINGS!!!! By that I mean music, community events, farmer’s markets etc. I think that if you support your community it makes your community that much stronger.  Living in San Diego makes doing this easy; everyday out here there is something going on. Any given day out here you can find open mics, street vendors, street fairs, food trucks, and just about every day you can find a farmer’s market somewhere. So I think I will be talking about them first.

I live in the North Park area of San Diego and my favorite FM (farmer’s market) is at North Park Way between 32nd Street and Herman, South of CVS. It goes on Thursdays from 3 pm to 7 pm, and there are so many cool vendors to see.  You can find some of the freshest fruits and veggies, usually picked at their peak freshness and at a really reasonable price too! Along with that there are always some great fish and meat vendors selling top quality products. I went there a few weeks ago and picked up some live stone crab at a buy 1 get 1 rate, (they were pretty good even though there wasn’t a whole lot to them) 5 bucks for the two of them so I couldn’t pass them up! On that same trip and the main reason my wife and I went, were the food trucks!!!!

There was one in particular that really caught our attention…. FOOD FARM!!!! They had us from jump. Their street guy or hype man was exactly that, full of energy and very easy to talk to without being obnoxious. The truck is run by Chef Kari Rich, who was trained at Le Cordon Bleu California and worked under some amazing chefs. Here is her website bio from http://www.foodfarmsd.com
Chef Kari Rich began her career with a degree and training at Le Cordon Bleu California. Chef Richs’ fine dining premier was at the landmark Top o the Cove Restaurant in La Jolla, where she studied under great chefs Alaine Redelsperger currently of Chez Michel in San Francisco, and Paul McCabe, currently of Kitchen 1540. Chef Rich progressed from an intern to the Lead Line Cook within the first year. From Top o the Cove she followed McCabe to Star of the Sea in Downtown San Diego where she further honed her skills in French, Mediterranean, Asian, and South American cuisines under the direction of Executive Chef Jesse Paul. When the famed Star closed its doors, Chef Rich went on to be Executive Sous Chef of Optimal Nutrition Inc. while doing Personal Catering for pro-athletes. Before opening the restaurant of Voyeur Night Club (Revolver) she worked at many fine dining restaurants and headed kitchens in the LA area before she took a job as Pastry Manager at Jack’s La Jolla. Executive Chef Rich has a passion for preparing local, organic, and sustainable food from scratch and is excited to bring her food to hungry San Diegans via FOOD FARM!

She works with her husband Dave Rich (the best food truck hype man I’ve ever met), and Xocihtl (its pronounced “so-chee” crazy huh? She was such a sweetheart), she helps cook, takes orders, and she is the 5’2” (actual size may vary lol! But she is a shorty!!) glue that helps make the Food Farm family what they are….a trio of wonderful! Together they make FOOD FARM a food truck that serves healthy and really delicious food. For us the dish of choice were the sliders, you get 2 with blue cheese, mixed greens, mustard marinated onions (which brings this beautiful sweetness to the burger that I normally wouldn’t go for but WOW is it great!), and delicious grass fed beef. If you haven’t had grass fed beef you are missing out on a damn near orgasmic experience.

They were delicious; we actually had them add Swiss cheese to one and bacon to both (duh!!! Bacon is a total no brainer!!!). The only problem was that I didn’t have an endless supply of sliders to walk around with. SOOOO FRICKIN GOOD!!!! Dave and Kari are expecting a baby girl in September. CONGRATS AND GOOD LUCK!!! Please go out and see Chef Kari, Xochitl, and Dave at the North Park Farmers Market. Here they are explaining their vision, and what a tasty vision it is!!

Another local thing that I love is musicians, and over the last few months my wife and I have been going to a lot local artist showcases here in San Diego. By going to these shows we have actually been able to meet a lot of the artists and develop friendships. There is so much local talent it’s hard to believe. The singer/songwriter community in SD is a pretty down to earth group. They are all so happy to meet fans since most of them are trying to make it big, but I think it’s mostly because a lot of them are genuinely great people! There are a few of them that we have been following lately, and with very good reason….THEY ARE PRETTY AMAZING!!!  Some of them will be showcased here with their websites and a few videos. All of these videos are ones that I have taken from various local shows.

One of the more recent show/local event/benefits that my wife and I attended was the “Farm to Table Brunch at Seabreeze Organic Farm” in Solana Beach, CA. We heard about the function through our friend and local musician Dawn Mitschele (http://dawnmitschele.com/). She is an extremely talented singer songwriter that we met at a show at “Across the Street” aka Mueller Massage School in SD. She’s got a folky vibe that is super sweet and really easy on the ears…SHE IS DAMN GOOD. To be honest she is actually hands down one of my favorite female singer songwriters that most people have probably never heard of, because they don’t take the time to support local music. Please take time to visit her site and give her a listen! I can pretty much give her album “IN THE MOONLIGHT’ the newly coveted (as of right now) “GOLDEN PENGUIN”, because I can listen to it over and over, and first song to last without skipping any tracks, while being totally satisfied in the whopping 10 bucks I spent on it (basically stole it for that price).

So at this brunch, filled with delicious food, farm tours and silent auctions (all benefiting the Sea Breeze Farm) there were great performances by local acts. Dawn of course being one of those performers got to sing with a friend of hers…you might know him as Mr. A-Z or by his superstar name Jason Mraz. That’s right the local boy gone universal was accompanying Ms. Mitschele in a beautiful rendition of “Across The Universe” by the Beatles (you know that little group from across the pond). They really sounded great together, but when you have artists of their caliber together you shouldn’t expect anything less. Here is the video of them, enjoy!

After all the performances were done we got the chance to meet Jason and he was so nice. We gave him a bracelet that means a lot to us from a company that does a lot for the community. The company is called Every Monday Matters (http://everymondaymatters.com/).  The basics thought of that company is that every day (not just Mondays) is a day to do something that matters to someone (everyone needs to be about this company and should go to the site to see what they are all about). My wife and I both think that not only Jason but all of the artist are doing something that matters to so many people by bringing music to our hearts. Along with the bracelet I gave Mr. Mraz my blog address so hopefully he will give it a read and send a comment (fingers crossed).

There are 3 other performers that I want to let you all know about and the only reason I am lumping them together is because you usually don’t see one without the other two too far behind.  They each stand very well on their own as well. Their names are John Hull (http://www.johnhullmusic.com/Main/Home.html), Kenny Eng (http://www.kennyeng.com/) and Rob Deez (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rob-Deez/70404533033). These guys each have their own distinct sound as you will read and see.

John Hull has a pop/acoustic sound that is easy listening no matter what age. His music is great to sing along with and the lyrics are insightful and playful. He does a lot of shows at Lestat’s Coffee House on 3343 Adams Ave San Diego, CA 92116 (http://www.lestats.com/main.htm as do the other guys) and has a loyal bunch of followers. Some of them have been long time friends and some, like my wife and I along with others, are pleasantly surprised to find new songs from an original artist, who puts his heart into every song. Here is a video for you of John playing "Definition of Insane", it's a song about the TV show Dexter season 2. In this season Dexter meets this crazy chick named Lila that burns her place down to try and lure Dexter into her little crazy web....

Kenny Eng has more of a bluesy vibe. His soul rings out through his fingers as he plays his guitar. His timing and sound are reminiscent of some of the best in blues, jazz, rock and contemporary. His artistry is only met by his kindness. He is genuinely one of the nicest guys I’ve met in a while. Here is a little piece of his bio that you can find on his site (listed above). “What makes Kenny different from so many other artists is the fact that his sound is so hard to categorize. He is equal parts Motown R&B, classic rock and Jeff Buckley but not really any of them at the same time. He can shift from the dark, ominous landscape heard on “The Tongue” to the whimsical, light-hearted “If I See You Again” in a split second. And his own musical tastes are just as varied. At any given performance, Kenny could perform songs by The Beatles to Bill Withers to Radiohead without even batting an eye.” Here is Kenny along with John Hull, Dawn Mitschele, Jason Ford, and Ernie Halter doing a version of “All You Need is Love” by the Beatles at Mueller.

Rob Deez is quite the character. His sound is a cross between Bushwalla, Ray Stevens, Sublime, and Tenacious D. with a mix of some O.D.B.  He has this infectious flow that will stick with you and have you humming his hits that he gets paid by the hour to write (song lyric from his song about writing rhymes on the job). While he’s usually the first to let you know that he is no “virtuoso” on the guitar his lyrical skills more than make up for it. They can either make you laugh hysterically or make you relate 100% to the situations he talks about. In my case it’s usually both. “Not A Friend” and “Dear Love” are examples of this.  If you haven’t had a chance to catch him you’re in luck because I will give you a taste of Rob Deez here…..hmmm…..never mind! Watch this video of "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and enjoy...
